Rivière by Aria: The Retreat below, the Rooftop Club above
Rivière by Aria stands above the Kangaroo Point Cliffs, looking across the Brisbane River to the City Botanic Gardens and the skyline beyond. The view comes first. Then the garden.
Rivière by Aria, at 470-480 Main Street, Kangaroo Point, was completed in 2023 by Aria Property Group, Brisbane developer. The architecture is by Bates Smart, landscape by RPS Group, and it was built by Rivière Constructions.
Bates Smart took their cue from the cliffs themselves. The building's form follows the geometric patterns of the rock face below, finished with immaculately detailed screens, warm timber soffits and lush sub-tropical landscaping. Up close you see breeze block screens, timber-marked concrete and a tiled facade.
The amenity is arranged in two places: The Retreat on the ground floor, and the Rooftop Club.
The Retreat
The Retreat is a series of communal spaces and secluded gardens, a place to reconnect with the outdoors without leaving home.
It begins at the Entry Garden. From there, the Nature Walk and Butterfly Walk lead through the planting, and the Play Space and Barbecue Area gives children room to explore while parents light the barbecue.
Inside, the Residents' Lobby opens to two rooms made for evenings in. The Private Theatre Room sits between the lobby and the barbecue area, and next to it is the Residents' Wine Cellar, a place to keep a collection, or simply a good bottle, close at hand.
The Rooftop Club
Up on the roof, the Rooftop Club balances open and intimate spaces, with lush planting that reflects Brisbane's sub-tropical climate.
- An Infinity Pool, with the city's horizon as its edge
- The Residents' Wine Bar and Lounge
- A Private Dining Room for family dinners and celebrations
- The Meadow and Picnic Area, a soft lawn with the river below
- A Fitness Centre
- A Magnesium Bath, beside the gym, for recovery after a session
Late on a summer afternoon, with the river turning silver and the cliffs in shadow, the meadow is a hard place to leave.
The residences
Rivière's thinking about fresh air carries through the building. The corridors are naturally ventilated, so residents enjoy fresh air and natural breezes throughout, and each residence is entered through an architecturally designed screen door.
A heavily planted home
The landscape is the quiet constant at Rivière. Across the building there are 8,210 trees and plants, from the gardens of The Retreat to the meadow on the roof. In 2023 the project also received UDIA Six Leaf Sustainability Accreditation.
Recognition
Rivière by Aria won the 2024 AIA Queensland Award for Residential Architecture, Multiple Housing, and the 2024 AILA Queensland Landscape Award for Gardens. In 2023 it was named Apartment Complex of the Year and Apartment of the Year at the HIA Queensland Awards, and Rivière Constructions won the 2023 UDIA Queensland award for Construction.
